As Hamlet so famously said in his soliloquy: "To be or not to be. That is the question."
But I tend to agree with Golda Meir on this one. There is no compromise. There is no question. There is only a decision. To be or not to be.
For a number of years I chose not to be, and the price I paid far exceeded the cost. My initial investment seemed harmless. Fitting in. People pleasing. Respecting authority figures. Being a good girl. Knowing my place. Not rocking the boat. After all, these were all the things I'd been taught in our society. It's what you had to do to get along in families, friendships, marriages and the workplace.
So I thought!
What I've come to know is that any of these done out of fear, not because you authentically want to do them, is detrimental in the long run. Yes, upfront seemingly harmless but long term, soul crushing.
Listening to my heart's voice, over my head's was instrumental in my perspective shift.
The voice that tells you all of your limitations. Reminds you of all your failures. That encourages you to go against your gut. That's the head.
The voice that reminds you of your uniqueness. That encourages you. That re-minds you to listen to your intuition over the well intended advice of others. That is your heart's voice.
Because I was determined to override the voice of my heart, I did many things that left me asking the same question Hamlet did - to be or not to be? He was asking was dying better than living? Because living wasn't going so well.
Of course life's not going so well if you aren't living 100% authentically as you were made to live. I befriended people that were far from friends, married men that loved me even less than they loved themselves, was cheated on, lied to, used and worked in an industry that went against many of my basic values. All because I hadn't taken the time to get to know who I was.
So if you're like I was, living off the approval of others, how do you become self-confident?
You start doing things to impress yourself.
You define your belief system. Then you hold your boundaries strong.
You do a body check. Then you follow through on what your gut is guiding you to do.
You keep promises to yourself. Then when challenged, you let your actions speak for themselves. You don't need to explain yourself to anyone!
You decide never to forsake yourself again because anything you "loose" outside of yourself is way less pricy then loosing yourself. Ever again.
